Women and men are welcome!

Our #13 morning session takes place on Thursday, July 2, 2020 –> from 8:30 to 9:30 am

Coffee, Chat & Learn with Alina Popa

Why do we need more female CEOs?

Gender equality is a human right, but our world faces a persistent gap in access to opportunities and decision-making power for women and men. The higher the role on the managerial structure, the lower the probability of the role to be occupied of female managers. Currently, only 4,8% of the CEOs* are women!

Let’s deep dive into this topic, by touching on the importance of gender diversity,

  • How does it impact the performance, productivity and innovation of every company
  • How can women advance in their careers and have equal chances at the workplace at any time, regardless of the family planning / age / background.

What’s in for you?

In this interactive session you will get yourself familiarized with

  1. Gender diversity and how we can close the gender gap
  2. Impact of women in management on performance and more – plenty of examples and studies available!
  3. Ways you can accelerate YOUR career at ANY time

In this Session will be plenty of examples emphasizing just a part of the advantages females’ CEOs bring along. We plan to have an open dialogue and brainstorm on what every single one of us can do, to do a step in this direction.

Alina Popa will be our host – she is an avid gender equality supporter – beside being a net4tec ambassador and a co-lead of Global Women@Pega, she founded and led the Business Women’s Network at SAP in Munich.

Alina is a global Project Manager at Pegasystems, a global IT company, where she leads global strategic projects focused on Customer Success. #9 Virtual Morning Session

Summary net4tec @ Virtual Morning Session #9
How to set up first-time leaders for success
28.05.2020 – Online

Managing a project in a group, transitioning from an individual contributor into a management role or starting a leadership career may seem harder than expected but it does not have to be. First-time leaders can prepare themselves for a successful start by self-reflection, putting themselves in other people’s shoes and acting as a role model. #FirstTimeLeader

Katrin Grunwald, the founder of The Globe Team, an organizational development consultancy supporting teams worldwide in working better together through on-site and virtual team development workshops is an expert for first-time leaders. She held a very interactive and pragmatic session with #net4tec explaining what should be done before starting as a leader. Together we explored the dos and don’ts of for future first time leaders and discussed recommendations for leaders of first-time leaders to make the transition from team member to team leader a success. #Leader

Asses your situation

In a small check in exercise everyone selected an item on their desk and shared their personal hashtag on leadership (i.e. #Feedback, #Knowyourself, #Transparency, #Inspiration, #ActiveListening, #Trust, #Communication #Learning etc.). After that everyone had a chance to assess their current leadership situation. Surprisingly half of the participants are leading a team already while the other half is planning to lead one in the future or simply was curious. The biggest challenge for most of the participants was moving from their own expertise to managing others with expertise. #Leadership

Self-reflection before starting

Before jumping into a new leadership role or just a project it is recommended to take a step back and set a good foundation by self-reflection. When looking at the concept of leadership it is advisable to look at three different aspects – self, team, and context. During the session, several practical options and questions have been presented to self-reflect around these three aspects. #Selfreflection

Self – What kind of leader do I want to be?

Look at yourself first and observe all leaders you have met throughout your life. Take a piece of paper and write down examples considering everybody who shaped you. The following list of question can be used as a guidance. #Awareness

  • What kind of leader do you want to be?
  • What does it mean to be a leader?
  • How do you want to be seen and perceived?
  • Which values do you want to be known for?
  • Create a portrait gallery of leaders you know (good and bad)?
  • What did/didn’t you like in leaders?
  • Which behaviors and values did/didn’t you like?
  • Who inspired you?
  • How did they interact with you?
  • How did they make you feel?

Team – How can I communicate with my team?

Put yourself into the shoes of your team to understand them individually. Find out what is on their mind to best support them and how to communicate with them. Do not be afraid to ask! #Communication

  • What is their strength?
  • What are they proud of?
  • What do they have been working on lately?
  • What is driving them regarding working with you?

Context – How to best manage expectations?

Think about yourself from different perspectives and see how you can best manage the different expectations coming from people around you (i.e. team, peers, boss).  Reach out for conversations and consider the following questions. #Expectations

  • Who are the different stakeholders of the team?
  • What are the expectations to reach certain outputs?
  • How do step into your leadership role?
  • Who are the people to support you, any allies?
  • Who are the customers of the team?

Recommendations for successful start

To ensure a successful start, it is advisable to create a leadership manifest. It is a valuable idea to have face-to-face meetings with your team members as well as a team workshop to establish trust. Explore the context together with your team. On the other hand, you should avoid jumping right into action without building a relationship with your team. Do not be afraid to communicate as often and as early as you can. Never assume others are like you. #Trust

Input for leaders of first time leaders

At the end, the important role of leaders of first-time leaders in setting first-time leaders up for success has been discussed. As any leader always act as a role mode, show empathy, and give guidance to your team. #Rolemodel

Key take away

  • Take time to self-reflect before starting
  • As a leader you are a role model
  • Define your leadership manifest
  • Leadership is personal – find your own authentic leadership style
  • Leaders of first-time leaders are important in setting first-time leaders up for success

14.05.2020 – Online

Covid19 hit us all abruptly. When faced with sudden changes or difficult situations, everyone reacts in an individual way depending on their resilience. But what is #Resilience? Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly or bounce back into shape as soon as possible from such a situation.

Nanna Rüster, senior executive coach for ‚leadership in transformation‘ and partner at Upgrade an organizational development consultant team, guided us through the topic of resilience by taking a different #Perspective and encouraging participants to share feelings as well as experiences on the subject interactively. Attendees state ranged from “energized”, “relaxed” over “roller coaster”, “unbalanced” and “stress”.

Several practical tips have been shared on how to navigate through the next coming weeks after the seven essential dimensions of resilience have been introduced.

  1. be optimistic
  2. accept the crisis
  3. Orientate towards the solution
  4. Leave the role of victim
  5. Take responsibility for your own life
  6. Build new networks
  7. Plan and shape the future

The key for everything is to create your own #Strategy. A short excurse to the four personality types and the Maslow’s pyramid showed how people are triggered differently and hence behave differently in a crisis. #Personality, your own experiences, and needs should be considered to find your own way.

To define their own new strategy participants were then asked to elaborate on questions like

  • “In what kind of condition, you want to reach the end of the year?”,
  • “What will your friends and colleagues say about you when they look back?”
  • “What do you have to do to have a particularly good celebration at the end of the year?”.

Simple tricks can be implemented to build up energy while working on four major fields for resilience – Mind – Body – Soul – Heart. Some of them will be shared here as well.

#Mind

Start with your mind. Step back and look at yourself, observe how you are thinking and talking about the situation as well as yourself. Identify where you need more energy.

  • Start journaling
  • Write about your current feelings and the situation
  • Change your attitude while moving it away in your language
  • Reframe your language and your thinking
  • Create a new reality for yourself
  • Focus on positive aspects

#Heart

Heart stands for what is feeding you and when do you feel emotional alive.

  • Make an altar and collect symbols for losses, failures, and unrealizable plans for this year
  • Grieve passionately
  • Build another altar with symbols to look forward to
  • Analyze your contacts and give them an energy index
  • Give and take with empathy

#Body

Allow sleep, food, sun, love, and exercise for your body and trust your body. Exercise for instance like:

  • Sit up right with feet on the ground
  • Feel your breathing
  • Feel your gravity
  • Use your space
  • Knock or drum your body

#Soul

Soul can be everything and is very special as well as personal. Look for things that make you feel alive. Find your own way. Everything is part of being resilient or alive like:

  • Feel your senses
  • Cook a dish
  • Watch movies
  • Get on a swing
  • Read a book

Key take away

  • Shape your own strategy in sync with your personality along mind, heart, body, and soul
  • MIND – observe yourself from a distance and create a new reality
  • HEART – check for energy sources and collect items to grieve and look forward to
  • BODY – balance food, sun, movement, love and sleep carefully
  • SOUL – find fulfilling events and activities and enjoy
